Bird populations offer relatively quick and informative information about overall ecological quality and value while their population changes are an excellent way of monitoring changes in habitat. Annual national bird population indices are used in the UK government’s Quality of Life monitoring assessments, for example see link here

Using standard field survey methods I am able to determine what bird species occur on any area of land, their winter numbers or breeding territories and thus densities in spring/summer. From these data I can go on to consider either the potential implications and/or the actual effects of changes in land management.

I am particularly interested in change and I am happy to discuss precise requirements with clients who enquire about predicting or investigating the effects of changes in land management on bird populations. I can design survey work to determine current situations, predict likely changes and, over longer periods, to examine change. I can adapt survey methodologies to a range of budgets and broadly predict the limits of confidence derived from particular expenditures.

I find it invaluable and most interesting to discuss project ideas early in their development in order to make the most of both the management work on the ground and my part in its assessment or monitoring. Do send me an e-mail, or letter, about what you have in mind and we can discuss what might be involved.
