Shropshire Rookeries Survey 2008. CONTINUED INTO 2009.

By an appeal to the general public a resurvey of all rookeries in the county, repeating the last rookery survey of 1975 – what has changed? The 1975 and 2008 results are on Google Earth.

The 2008 survey (SRS08) produced records of 538 rookeries (submitted by 156 recorders) which compares very well with 460 reported to the 1975 survey, though the true figure has probably always been closer to 1,000. The results from 2008 will be analysed and published. Both 1975 and 2008 sites are to be found on the Google Earth maps on the SRS08 web pages.

The rookery sites database (but not the Google Earth maps) will be maintained and enhanced as new sites are reported during the on-gong survey work for the national and county bird atlases through to the summer of 2011. During that time records of additional rookeries will be welcome with a view to the production of a much more complete list of county colonies by 2011 ready for the subsequent publication of the county bird Atlas.
