Why does the book Beckwith’s Birds need a website?

Because the book contains all Beckwith's original ornithological work. Both Chapter two, "The nineteenth century environment" and the whole of Part Two are being made available as a PDF. This facilitates further research by making it possible to search the text, including by locality. An index in the book would have been very large, a gargantuan task to create and unwieldy to use.

The PDF is now available. It is a copyright, downloadable, read-only PDF document. The text cannot be copied or printed however researchers can request a personal key by applying for access.

For our interest we commissioned a graphologist to analyze the only example of Beckwith's handwriting. This short letter was written on 17 May 1877 – to find out more click here
